What the fuck is wrong with 2017? Seriously. Did someone find my old iPod from the 10th grade and think: You know what? We need all these bands to release some new singles this year just to fuck with this guy. I feel like his nostalgic angst will be the fuel that lights 2017 ablaze.

…anyway here’s “Wonderwall”

Just kidding. This is a new Linkin Park song. Kind of.

“Heavy” is a very strange musical experience and I feel like a grand exodus of Linkin Park’s remaining fan base is about to be extremely confused. This song is about as far away from what we have come to expect from this band and I’m not sure if thats a good thing or a bad thing.

On the one hand, I constantly find myself impressed with the musician Kiiara who sings the response to Chester Bennington’s initial lyrics. She’s one of the few pop divas who doesn’t annoy me overall, and her dubstep backing tracks seem more reminiscent of early Frou Frou songs and far away from what I’ve seen in this disgusting trap genre that seems to be crapping all over the airwaves.

As a vehicle for Kiiara to show off her vocal skills and turn down the autotune a bit, “Heavy” succeeds and I don’t want to take away from that. However, as a Linkin Park song, its pretty uninspired and ultimately I expect more from a band who has been around as long as they have. They really seemed to come into their own with the surprising “Minutes to Midnight” and I was looking forward to seeing if they could keep it up (Spoiler alert, I listened to the albums after that one… the answer is a resounding “meh”).

I’d say skip this one unless you are a fan of Kiiara.

The Score: 4/10 (Kiiara feat. Chester Bennington gets a 6/10)
